The Water Footprint of Modern Consumer Society
Arjen Y. Hoekstra
Routledge
711 - 3rd Avenue, Floor 8
New York, NY 10017-9209
9781849714273 $40.95 www.routledge.com

The Water Footprint of Modern Consumer Society is a scholarly examination of just how much water today's society uses in everything from agriculture to the production of commercial goods, as well as domestic uses. A "water footprint" is a measurement of just how much water is directly and indirectly used toe create a product - for example, 1 kilogram of beef takes 15,000 liters of water, and 1 pair of jeans takes 8,000 liters of water to produce. Such measurements can be applied to quantify and map water use, with the goal of fostering a sustainable water ecology. Imports of water-intensive products can be beneficial to nations where fresh water is scarce, but this in turn creates a dependency of the water supplies of foreign nations. Chapters discuss the water footprint of biofuels, the supply-chain water footprint of paper, how to make water use more efficient, pitfalls to watch out for in trade, the importance of product transparency, and much more. An absolute "must-have" reference and resource, especially for problem-solvers confronting the twenty-first century challenges of overpopulation, desertification, and water scarcity, The Water Footprint of Modern Consumer Society is worthy of the highest recommendation especially for college and university library collections.

Money 101
Barbour Publishing
P.O. Box 719
Uhrichsville, OH 44683
9781620297483 $12.99 www.barbourbooks.com

Part of the "Bible Guides for Life" series intended for readers of all ages, Money 101 is an accessible primer about basic money management from a Christian point of view. The values of scripture as well as common sense are used to reinforce recommended guidelines, and budgeting pointers are made with the importance of charitable giving or tithing to churches in mind. Chapters cover how to set up and abide by a budget, saving and investing effectively, debt management, when to rent or buy (especially where mortgages are concerned), insurance and retirement concerns, and much more. "Remember, though, to account for inflation when you think about retirement. Most financial books state 2 to 4 percent as the yearly rate of inflation. So to really know how much your lifestyle will cost, you have to figure that in. If it costs you $1,000 a month just to keep the household running right now and if inflation is at 4 percent, then next year it will take you ($1,000 x .04 = 40) $1,040 to run that same household." Highly recommended, especially as a basic self-teaching resource or an educational tool for Christian parents to share with their teenaged children.

Alex Grecian's THE BLACK COUNTRY (9780399159336, $26.95) provides a follow-up story to Grecian's prior acclaimed debut novel The Yard and tells of detective Inspector Walter Day, who moves outside the crime scenes of London to investigate the disappearance of a young boy and his parents in a remote coal mining town. The only evidence is a human eyeball found in a bird's nest - but it won't remain the only evidence as he uncovers close-held town superstitions, misfortunes, and an epidemic which threatens everyone. With mining falling apart, the town also seems to follow as Day embarks on a race against time to uncover the heart of a deadly mystery. Beatriz Williams' A HUNDRED SUMMERS (9780399162169, $26.95) follows her acclaimed debut novel of 2012, Overseas, with a follow-up offering a Depression-era story of love and secrets. The setting is the summer of 1938 where a New York socialite travels to her family's coastal cottage with her mother and six-year-old sister. A whirlwind romance has left her broken-hearted and intent on recovering when her plans are challenged by her ex-best friend and her former fiance, who also arrive in town for the season. Gossip, betrayal, and repressed feelings arise to challenge and confuse all of their lives in this tense novel of romance, recovery, and new beginnings. Royce Prouty's STOKER'S MANUSCRIPT (9780399158551, $25.95) provides a powerful story of terror, suspense and mystery as it tells of brothers who were outcasts even before they were orphaned as infants in Romania. Even in America the Barkeley brothers can't escape the curse that lies over them. The story begins years later, following one brother, who has become a priest in the Midwest, and the other who has become a buyer and seller of rare books. Both face the dangers and evils of their past when Stoker's famous Dracula manuscript emerges with clues hidden within its pages that reveal the burial sites of Dracul family members. Will their investigations unearth a sleeping secret best left hidden? A fine story emerges, highly recommended for any collection strong in mysteries and horror.

Armstrong, USN. Cloud computing is a colloquial expression used to describe a variety of different types of computing concepts that involve a large number of computers that are connected through a real-time communication network (typically the Internet). Cloud computing is a jargon term without a commonly accepted non-ambiguous scientific or technical definition. In science, cloud computing is a synonym for distributed computing over a network and means the ability to run a program on many connected computers at the same time. The popularity of the term can be attributed to its use in marketing to sell hosted services in the sense of application service provisioning that run client server software on a remote location. "Cloud Computing" by computer expert Kris Jamsa is a superbly organized and presented 324 page compendium the presents an articulate and 'user friendly' introduction to cloud technologies in general, and specifics about an a service (SaaS), platform as service (PaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), and desktop virtualization in particular. Of special note are the real-world case studies providing examples of moving information into the cloud. Informed and informative, "Cloud Computer" is an excellent instructional textbook and a highly recommended addition to professional, community, and academic library Computer Science reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Aaron Copland (November 14, 1900 - December 2, 1990) was an American composer, composition teacher, writer, and later in his career a conductor of his own and other American music. Instrumental in forging a distinctly American style of composition, in his later years he was often referred to as "the Dean of American Composers" and is best known to the public for the works he wrote in the 1930s and 1940s in a deliberately accessible style often referred to as Populist and which the composer labeled his "vernacular" style. Works in this vein include the ballets Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid and Rodeo, his Fanfare for the Common Man and Third Symphony. The open, slowly changing harmonies of many of his works are archetypical of what many people consider to be the sound of American music, evoking the vast American landscape and pioneer spirit. In addition to his ballets and orchestral works, he produced music in many other genres including chamber music, vocal works, opera and film scores. "The Complete Copland" is a 360 page compendium enhanced with some one hundred illustrations. Co-written by Copland and music historian Vivian Perlis, "The Complete Copland" is a comprehensive and wonderfully detailed chronological overview of Copland's life and work. A welcome addition to academic library 20th Century Music History reference collections, "The Complete Copland" is also highly recommended for non-specialist general readers with an interest in learning about the contributions of Aaron Copland to American music.

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. Their best-known lineup, consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, became the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, introducing more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century. Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later utilized several genres, ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical elements in innovative ways. In the early 1960s, their enormous popularity first emerged as "Beatlemania", but as their songwriting grew in sophistication, they came to be perceived by many fans and cultural observers as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the era's sociocultural revolutions. "The Best Beatles Book Ever" by musicologist and author Paul Charles focuses on the years The Beatles were writing and recording their music together as a group effort. Informed and informative, "The Best Beatles Book Every" is very strongly recommended reading for their legions of fans -- now aging Babyboomers -- and will prove to be a popular addition to academic and community library 20th Century Music History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Wheat allergy is a rare allergy which typically presents itself as a food allergy, but can also be a contact allergy resulting from occupational exposure to the gluten properties of wheat. Like all allergies, wheat allergy involves immunoglobulin E and mast cell response. Typically the allergy is limited to the seed storage proteins of wheat, some reactions are restricted to wheat proteins, while others can react across many varieties of seeds and other plant tissues. Twenty-seven potential wheat allergens have been successfully identified. The most severe response is exercise/aspirin induced anaphylaxis attributed to one omega gliadin that is a relative of the protein that causes celiac disease. Other more common symptoms include nausea, urticaria, atopy. It is critical for those who have an allergy to wheat that they consume only gluten free meals. Build them in, because 'Free shipping' has been tested and retested so many times that the concept, at least through this decade and possibly well into the next, is a no-brainer. Nutritionism is an alleged paradigm that assumes that it is the scientifically identified nutrients in foods that determine the value of individual food stuffs in the diet. It is the idea that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In "Nutritionism: The Science and Politics of Dietary Advice", Gyorgy Scrinis (Lecturer in Food Politics, School of Land and Environment, University of Melborne, Australia) provides a science-based framework and terminology for analyzing the characteristics and consequences of nutritionism. "Nutritionism: The Science and Politics of Dietary Advice" documents how nutritionism has aligned the demands and perceived needs of consumers with the commercial interests of food manufacturers and corporations. Professor Scrinis offers an alternative paradigm for assessing the healthfulness of foods that privileges food production and processing quality, cultural-traditional knowledge, and sensual-practical experience, and promotes less reductive forms of nutrition research and dietary advice. "Nutritionism: The Science and Politics of Dietary Advice" is an impressive work of detailed scholarship and highly recommended for academic library Health & Medicine reference collections. It should also be noted that "Nutritionism: The Science and Politics of Dietary Advice" is also available in a Kindle edition ($17.59).

Written in plain terms to be accessible to pet owners everywhere, Health and Nutrition for Dogs and Cats: A Guide for Pet Parents is a practical, no-nonsense demystification of how to properly care for one's pet. From the basics of how to select quality pet foods (lately commercial pet foods have seen an explosion of grain and other unsavory ingredients, which do not provide any nutritional or beneficial value to dogs or cats), tailoring the diet of one's pet to its specific needs, allergies in pets, precautions to take against pet parasites, and more. Health and Nutrition for Dogs and Cats is not a comprehensive pet health resource; it focuses primarily on nutrition-related issues, not first aid for injuries or other medical matters such as vaccination schedules. Yet the in-depth, user-friendly guideline are an absolute "must-read" for any current or prospective pet owner! Highly recommended. "Words such as premium, ultra, and holistic are powerful lures, promises of a quality level too often undelivered in terms of your pet's nutrition... a pet food manufacturer can package the absolute lowest quality pet food ever produced and legally label it as ultra or super or premium or holistic pet food, or use any of the descriptors in whatever combination they prefer."

Chapters scrutinize how the interpretation and execution of the principle of habeas corpus has evolved in American law from colonial days, when the basic principle was inherited from English common law, to President Abraham Lincoln's temporary suspension of habeas corpus (due to the pressures of the Civil War), its use during the World Wars (with particular note to President Roosevelt's internment of Japanese-Americans), to "Obama's Legal Black Hole", in which American citizens designated "enemy combatants" can be held indefinitely without trial. Monthly Review Press

New York, NY 10001
9781583673447 $16.95 www.monthlyreview.org

Social critic and educator Henry A. Giroux presents America's Education Deficit and the War on Youth, a scathing indictment of the myriad deleterious manners in which American society is failing the impoverished, the disabled, minorities and especially young people. Giroux particularly warns against growing influence of religious, market-worshiping, and other forms of fundamentalism, and the current trends in American society toward glorifying cruelty (not only in popular media, but also in public policy that slashes food stamps and other benefits from the desperately poor who need it most). The "school-to-prison pipeline", in which youthful indiscretions such as dress code violations, doodling on desks, spitwads, or food fights are criminalized - sometimes even as charged misdemeanors with fines and possible jail time - reinforces a disturbing trend in America's de facto war on young people, culminating in for-profit prisons and notorious "kids for cash" scandals, in which warped laws and values make it lucrative to send young people to jail for any excuse whatsoever. Awareness of the systemic problems in American society is the first step toward combating them, and to this end America's Education Deficit and the War on Youth does not disappoint.

Blessings of the Burden: Reflections and Lessons in Helping the Homeless is the testimony of social worker Alan R. Burt, who has strived to aid the homeless for the past nineteen years, and now serves as the director of an organization that works to help the homeless of Cape Cod. A faithful Christian, Burt speaks not only of his personal and spiritual experiences working on behalf of those most in need, but also of cost-effective approaches that have successfully improved dire situations. Blessings of the Burden pays homage to the religious mission to serve the poor and the suffering, in the name of Jesus Christ, but its primary focus is on the humanitarian work, not on the religious beliefs of those who undertake it. One particularly eye-opening moment comes from Burt's interview of Rick Presbrey, who opened the NOAH (No Other Alternative Housing) Shelter: "'What the community forgets, or wants to forget, is that the NOAH Shelter was opened because of the community's failure to provide enough affordable housing. The NOAH Shelter is not the cause of homelessness on Cape Cod. The cause of homelessness is the low-paying jobs and lack of housing that is affordable because costs are driven up by seasonal renters and second-home buyers.'" A profound and highly recommended account of individual and group efforts to fight a serious and enduring social ill, Blessings of the Burden is highly recommended.

WHO OWNS THE FUTURE? examines the effects network technologies have had on our economy, arguing that the rise of digital networks such as Facebook and Google has led to recession and all but destroyed the middle class. Thanks to digital changes more industries face even more challenges to success - but there is an alternative that would allow technology's benefits to stabilize the middle class and allow it to grow, and this book focuses on these possibilities. Examination of recent ventures consider how the modern digital revolution has centralized wealth rather than benefiting society as a whole. The vision of a new model for a more humanistic economy makes for an engrossing survey of future choices and how technology can be purposely used to build a better social structure.

UNGIFTED: INTELLIGENCE REDEFINED explores the latest research in genetics and neuroscience and considers changes in the world of cognitive psychology and social development as he considers the world of special abilities in children and how traditional assessments of gifted and ungifted children lack in accuracy and diagnosis. Scott Barry Kaufman was himself deemed 'ungifted', sent to a school for learning disabled students, and told he would never achieve greatness. UNGIFTED is his answer to the failures of a system, documenting the science of assigning labels to children and revealing the psychology of achievement that often fails to take the individual into account. Kaufman is a professor at NYU and received his PhD in psychology from Yale, so he's in the perfect position to comment authoritatively about the labels of 'gifted' and 'ungifted' and how they evolve. A sex offender is a person who has committed a sex crime. What constitutes a sex crime differs by culture and legal jurisdiction. Most jurisdictions compile their laws into sections, such as traffic, assault and sexual. The majority of convicted sex offenders have convictions for crimes of a sexual nature; however, some sex offenders have simply violated a law contained in a sexual category. Some of the crimes which usually result in a mandatory sex-offender classification are: a second prostitution conviction, sending or receiving obscene content in the form of SMS text messages (sexting), relationship between young adults and teenagers resulting in corruption of a minor (if the age between them is greater than 1,060 days; if any sexual contact was made by the adult to the minor, child molestation has occurred). If sexual conduct occurred, unlawful sexual conduct involving a minor has occurred. Other serious offences are sexual assault, statutory rape, bestiality, child sexual abuse, incest, rape, and sexual imposition. With the coming of the internet, sexual predators are able to expand their operations, especially against minors. "Internet Sex Offenders" by academician and registered clinical psychologist Michael C. Seto is a 320 page compendium that provides an extensive and detailed examination of the internet's impact on sexual offenders and predators. Beginning with an overview of online sexual offending, "Internet Sex Offenders" continues with chapters on child pornography, solicitation, etiology, online offender characteristics, the connection between online and contact offending, risk assessment, and intervention. Of special note is the final chapter: Conclusions and Future Directions. Enhanced with the inclusion of four resource sections (Juvenile Prostitution, trafficking and Sex Tourism; Assessment of Online Offenders; Treatment; Glossary of Technical Terms), an extensive reference listing, and a comprehensive index, "Internet Sex Offenders" is an important work of seminal scholarship and a highly recommended addition to professional and academic library Psychological Studies reference collections in general, and Sexual Predator/Offender supplemental reading lists in particular.

The Human Eros: Eco-Ontology and the Aesthetics of Existence is an extensive philosophical treatise, drawing upon the contemplations of John Dewey, Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Santayana, and Native American traditions. Author Thomas M. Alexander (Professor of Philosophy, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale) postulates that humans have the need to experience meaning and value, or "Human Eros." Cultures are describes as environments or "spiritual ecologies" which have the potential to cultivate Human Eros. Nature plays a key role in sustaining human cultural exisenct, yet Western philosophy is lacking in models that take ecological thinking into account. With the concept of "eco-ontology", Alexander searches for ways to better incorporate the role of Nature into the human search for meaning, beginning with acknowledging the power that Nature has over Being. A call to incorporate Dewey's philosophy into a pragmatic and ecological philosophy, The Human Eros is an in-depth read for intermediate to advanced students in philosophy, and an excellent addition to university and graduate school philosophy libraries.

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a German philosopher and author who challenged how people viewed morality, religion, and the role of the individual. After his death, his ideas were notoriously cherry-picked by the Nazis, who ignored his strong criticisms of anti-Semitism, his cautions against excessive nationalism, and his pride in his alleged Polish heritage; Nietzsche would very likely have abhorred the Holocaust, and despised the misuse of his name. On the Genealogy of Morals is one of Nietzche's more accessible works, now available in unabridged audiobook format. Ian Johnston's brand new translation clarifies Nietzsche's continued evaluations of the meaning of morality, originally published a year after his morality treatise "Beyond Good and Evil". In On the Genealogy of Morals, Nietzsche searches for an understanding of morality that is not dependent on Judeo-Christian tradition, questioning past philosophers for their unthinking reliance on the Bible. The very notion of morality has the potential for manipulating the populace, in manners that can breed weakness or feeble minds, especially when talented, intelligent individuals are not expected to (or forbidden to) think for themselves. Critical and unrelenting, On the Genealogy of Morals is a classic of philosophy, highly recommended especially for public and college library audiobook collections. 5 CDs, 6 hours 33 min.

It should also be noted that "Black Towers To Danger" is also available in a paperback edition (9781592122578, $9.95, 132 pp).

General Grant and the Rewriting of History: How the Destruction of General William S. Rosecrans Influenced Our Understanding of the Civil War challenges popular preconceptions about the Civil War, and especially of the famous Union General Ulysses S. Grant, who went on to be a two-term President of the United States. Grant's memoirs are often taken as a definitive historical accounting - but memoirs are only as accurate as the man who pens them. Historian Frank P. Varney has spent years critically comparing Grant's memoirs with a wealth of other primary sources, and has come to an astonishing conclusion: while Grant was undoubtedly a great general, he was also skilled at manipulating the truth for his own benefit, and nursed grudges with a vengeance. General Grant and the Rewriting of History examines evidence that Grant made biased reports, falsified official documents, and lied to an army court of inquiry. Grant particularly targeted Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans for character assassination, and to a dramatic extent succeeded; to this day, Rosecrans is infamous for a battlefield breakdown that very likely never happened, since the only sources of it are from unreliable informants, who are flatly contradicted by other accounts. General Grant and the Rewriting of History is not only an invaluable addition to Civil War studies and reference shelves, but also a sharp caution against putting too much blind faith in any one person's testimony, memoir, or historical accounting. Highly recommended.

John Wilkes Booth: Beyond the Grave suggests the possibility that Booth, the notorious assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, was never captures and executed; instead, another man was apprehended in Booth's place, while Booth continued his acting career, married, and had children. The evidence supporting this theory is largely circumstantial; Jameson draws upon papers and diaries from private collections to make his case, as well as offer a new window into the mind of a President-killer. Regardless of whether one believes the central premise, John Wilkes Booth: Beyond the Grave is a captivating perspective, thoroughly accessible to lay readers and historians alike.

Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (November 15, 1887 - March 6, 1986) was an iconic American artist. Born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, O'Keeffe first came to the attention of the New York art community in 1916. She made large-format paintings of enlarged blossoms, presenting them close up as if seen through a magnifying lens, and New York buildings, most of which date from the same decade. Beginning in 1929, when she began working part of the year in Northern New Mexico - which she made her permanent home in 1949 - O'Keeffe depicted subjects specific to that area. O'Keeffe has been recognized as the Mother of American Modernism. She first honed her remarkable skills as an artist wile summering at Alfred Stieglitz's family estate at Lake George in upstate New York. It is this early time period in her career as an artist that is the subject of "Modern Nature: Georgia O'Keeffe and Lake George", a superbly illustrated, 200 page compendium enhanced with commentaries by the team of Erin B. Coe (Chief Curator of the Hyde Collection), Gwendolyn Ownes (former consultant curator and assistant director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, Canada), and Bruce Robertson (Professor of Art History, University of California, Santa Barbara). Part of the "War and Conflict in the Modern World" series, Statebuilding is a scholarly analysis of creating competent, legitimate, and sustainable institutions of governance, particularly in the wake of civil war. Author Timothy Sisk (Professor of the Josef Korbel School for International Studies, University of Denver) scrutinizes means to aid a nascent state's ability to integrate social differences, manage conflicts and resources, set national priorities. Whether a global statebuilding enterprise can successfully craft peaceful, just, democratic, and stable nation-states is as yet unknown; Statebuilding offers information, tools, and positive ideas gleaned from hard-learned lessons to aid in the process. "Several findings resonate in the experience to promote rule of law. The first is that countries emerging from conflict inevitably face difficult decisions on transitional justice, both in terms of the extent and nature of prosecution of war-time atrocities but also the often selective and incomplete nature of such prosecutions... The second is that many practitioners, at least, recognize that the now-common model of a Truth and Reconciliation Commision, the mechanism used in democratizing Chile or post-war/democratizing South Africa, is not a one-size-fits-all solution that can be dropped into other social contexts." Statebuilding is an absolute "must-have" for college and university library political studies shelves, worthy of the highest recommendation.

Regnery Publishing, Inc.

The Forgotten Conservative: Rediscovering Grover Cleveland examines the principles, political thinking, and legacy of Stephen Grover Cleveland (1837-1908), well-known as the only American president who has ever served two non-consecutive terms. Although Cleveland was a Democrat, his beliefs and ideals will sound familiar to modern-day conservatives. President Cleveland cut taxes at every opportunity, championed limits on federal power, vetoed more bills than all his predecessors combined (most often on the grounds that Congress was either spending too much, or acting in absence of a clear Constitutional mandate), and held that men should look to their neighbors and communities for charity when needed, rather than becoming dependent on the government. At the end of Cleveland's second term, the Democratic party turned notably more progressive, yet Cleveland's ideals and policies remain part of a historical legacy that resonates with American conservatives over a century later. The Forgotten Conservative is an excellent addition to Political Science shelves; liberals and conservatives alike will find this portrait of a strong-willed and resilient national leader fascinating from cover to cover.

"Science: A Discovery in Comics" is a well-organized, witty presentation of the history of science in graphic novel form. Starting as a guided chronological tour, hosted by figures of author Margaret and spouse Yiri, "Science a Discovery in Comics" takes the enthralled reader from Archimedes and the ancient Greeks to quantum theory and modern times, all in comic format. Easy to read, simple graphic explanations help present complex history, theory, and practices of science, making the vast, intimidating subject accessible to junior high students and adults. Subject areas presented include Chemistry, Astronomy, Physics, Biology, Geology, and Quantum Theory. A fascinating example of this ambitious treatment is an illustrated comparison between the classical world view of science and the quantum world view, on page 171: This pairs and compares determinism with non-determinism, the universe viewed as a machine vs. the universe viewed as an organic system, incompatible opposites vs. complementary opposites, objective observation vs. subjective participation, and reductionism vs. holism. Each "ism" is illustrated by a simple example, and the sense of vast comparison is efficiently and correctly conveyed, with charm, humor, and style. "Science A Discovery in Comics" is part of an educational graphic novel series by the author, with an earlier title explaining Philosophy through human history. For easy access to a difficult area of study, try reading "Science a Discovery in Comics." You will find both knowledge and entertainment in abundance.

Yet Russell's passion burned brightest for trial law, and continued to shine throughout the course of his career. Vivid and accessible to readers of all backgrounds, Senator Richard B. Russell and My Career as a Trial Lawyer is insightful and engaging from cover to cover. "While a highly detailed plan can certainly benefit even congenial co-parents, it is ideal for co-parents who find themselves disagreeing more than they agree or for situations where there is hostility and resistance to sharing custody. A detailed plan also allows you to stipulate arrangements for the children at different ages, recognizing that as they get older, certain aspects of your co-parenting situation may need to change." Co-Parenting 101 is an absolute "must-have" for any separating, divorcing, or divorced couple with children, worthy of the highest recommendation.

Dada, Surrealism, and the Cinematic Effect

Wilfrid Laurier University Press
Wilfrid Laurier University
Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, N2L 3C5
9781554586257 $85.00 wlupress.wlu.ca

Filmmaker, critic, and teacher R. Bruce Elder presents Dada, Surrealism, and the Cinematic Effect, a companion to his earlier volume "Harmony and Dissent", about the early reception of cinema among the intellectual community, including art theorists, philosophers, cultural theorists. The common belief is that the first film critics disdained the plebeian nature of early cinema, yet Dada, Surrealism, and the Cinematic Effect challenges this assumption with evidence of a different reception. Some writers of the early cinematic era had envisioned it as a new art of untapped potential, with the ability to superbly reflect day-to-day life. This more positive view was especially widespread among critics whose passions included the foremost fields of art, particularly the Dada and Surrealist movements. Extensively researched and heavily annotated with an index, Dada, Surrealism, and the Cinematic Effect is especially recommended for cinema history shelves.

Pro-slavery and anti-slavery sentiments were embedded in children's literature as a way of conditioning young readers to either accept or reject that institution in American culture and society. But this phenomena has never been rigorously studied until now with the publication of "Slavery in American Children's Literature, 1790-2010" by Paula T. Connolly (Associate Professor of English, University of North Carolina at Charlotte). This 270 page compendium of seminal scholarship examines both well known and obscure antebellum children's literature, then goes on to provide an instructive overview of the changes in children's literature with respect to slavery as reflected by an evolving context of American racial politics from the post-civil war Reconstruction era through the Civil Rights era, and into contemporary times of the 21st century. Enhanced with the inclusion of extensive notes, a substantial bibliography, and a comprehensive index, "Slavery in American Children's Literature, 1790-2010" is unique, informed, informative, and very highly recommended addition to academic library American History, Black Studies, and American Literary History reference collections. Computer tomography (CT) scanners send beams of radiation through a person and measure the amount of radiation that arrives at various detectors... Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners measure changes in a magnetic field caused by excited hydrogen nuclei in water. Mathematical transformations map these measurements to water density values at sample points within the person." Diagrams, figures, and some full-color illustrations help illuminate the meticulous theories and definitions. A bibliography and index round out this scholarly text, highly recommended for professionals working with isosurface models or graduate school mathematics shelves.

The Unwritten Diary of Israel Unger

Wilfrid Laurier University Press
Wilfrid Laurier University
Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, N2L 3C5
9781554588312 $24.99 wlupress.wlu.ca

Part of the "Life Writing Series" of Wilfrid Laurier University Press, The Unwritten Diary of Israel Unger is the true-life memories of Holocaust survivor Israel Unger, one of only a handful of Polish Jews to survive to the end of World War II in the city of Tarnow, down from a population of 25,000 at the start of the Nazi occupation. Chapters recount the hardships Unger endured as one of nine people who hid for two years in an attic crawl space, emerging only to forage for food at night, a situation similar (but not identical) to that of Holocaust victim Anne Frank. Yet the end of the war did not bring safety to Polish Jews; anti-Semitism, false accusations of the "blood libel" myth, and possible collaboration by the authorities prompted multiple postwar murders of repatriated Jews. The deadly Kielce pogrom was one of Poland's most vicious postwar massacres. To protect their children, Israel's parents sent him and his brother as "orphans" to France. The Unger family was eventually reunited, but struggled with an uncertain future, until they obtained papers granting them the opportunity to emigrate to Canada in 1951. Although The Unwritten Diary of Israel Unger spans nations and continents, the threat of persecution and the shadow of the Holocaust remain ongoing themes, culminating full circle when Unger speaks of searching through records of the Holocaust (and the brave people who resisted it), including a visit to his birth house. An erudite, honest, and thought-provoking personal testimony, The Unwritten Diary of Israel Unger is a welcome contribution to public and college library Holocaust Studies shelves, highly recommended.

The Origins and Onset of the Romanian Holocaust

The Holocaust was the mass murder or genocide of approximately six million Jews during World War II, a program of systematic state-sponsored murder by Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, throughout German-occupied territory. Of the nine million Jews who had resided in Europe before the Holocaust, approximately two-thirds were killed. Over one million Jewish children were killed in the Holocaust, as were approximately two million Jewish women and three million Jewish men. A network of over 40,000 facilities in Germany and German-occupied territory were used to concentrate, hold, and kill Jews and other victims. These are grim statistics and most attention in books and films about the Holocaust focus on Germany. Lesser known is the massive killings inflicted upon the Romanian Jews that took place in Romania shortly after Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union and was significantly abetted by antisemitic Romanians. "The Origins and Onset of the Romanian Holocaust" by Henry Eaton (a retired associate professor of history with the University of North Texas) is a 224 page compendium detailing a national tragedy arising from Romania's history of antisemitism. Informed and informative, "The Origins and Onset of the Romanian Holocaust" is a significant and highly recommended addition to Holocaust Studies supplemental reading lists and academic library 20th Century Romanian History reference collections.
